Forensic science is a very broad topic to discuss but a very interesting subject to study that uses the application of various sciences to the law. This is another field of scientific study that made a huge impact in shaping the world of justice, through uncovering the secrets in the crime scene, identifying criminals, fuelling crime investigations and other related investigations.
Another division of forensic science that uses the application of allied sciences and analytical techniques to questions concerning documents is what we call forensic document examination. This study consist of analyzing and comparing questioned handwriting and documents, hand printing, typewriting, commercial printing, photocopiers, paper, inks, and other documentary evidence with known material in order to establish the authenticity of the questioned material as well as in detecting alterations. They work mostly with district attorneys, investigators, banks, insurance companies, law enforcement officers, and other private entities.
Using forensic document examination it can identify all sorts of tampered documents like forgery detection, counterfeit documents, line sequence and intended writing, identification of inserted and substituted material and even reading under whiteout or other obliterated material. They can examine and can offer written opinions on a variety of disputed document problems including last will and testament, deeds, medical records, time sheets, loan agreements, election petitions, checks, contacts, income tax record, anonymous letter, and some other documents in question.
The most common task of a forensic document examiner is handwriting identification. This very tedious job compares the questioned hand writing with known writing for the purpose of identifying the author. This is based on fact that no two people have ever been proven to have the same handwriting. Thus, handwriting is as identifiable as the person’s fingerprints.
Other than that, a forensic examiner can also tell the date of creation or if the date on the document is accurate. When it comes in altered document, there are two ways in doing it. It can be an added clause at the end of a contract or a deleted word like the amount of medication prescribed to a patient. It is amazing what these forensic examiners can do, not only they can identify the alteration but they can also restore what the document originally said.
